Tuesday, March 20, 2012 (Boston, Massachusetts) - The Mount Ida College men's volleyball team dropped their ninth consecutive loss last Tuesday night and their fifth Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) bid to hosting league powerhouse Emmanuel College by scores on 9-25, 8-25 and 14-25. The Mustangs remain winless in GNAC play at 0-5 with an overall record of 1-14.
The Mustangs were led offensively by junior hitter and captain Spencer Hastings (Orlando, FL/Timber Creak) with seven kills and two digs while senior hitter Franklin McCaffrey (East Greenwich, RI/East Greenwich) chipped in three kills on nine attempts with no errors also adding 13 dishes. Junior libero Ricky Oliveira (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford) added five digs respectively.
Emmanuel was led by junior setter Nick Updike (Manhattan Beach, CA) recorded a game-high 11 kills and 17 assists.
The Saints came out strong in the opening set, slamming home 13 kills while hitting .522 from the floor en route to a 25-9 win. Updike led the way in the first set, putting down five kills on eight attempts while also notching four digs.
In set two, Emmanuel continued to power their way past the Mustangs with an aggressive offense that again collected 13 kills while hitting .526 from the floor. Senior middle hitter Alex Petty (Wayland, MA) was perfect in the set, collecting four kills on four swings while Updike chipped in with four more winners in the 25-8 route.
The hosts completed the sweep with a 25-14 win in set three to take the match, 3-0. The Saints did not make one hitting error in the final frame, swinging for a .562 attacking percentage (9-0-16) while also rattling off four aces.
Updike finished the match hitting .733 from the field (11-0-17) to go along with 17 helpers, five digs and a match-high four aces. Petty chipped in with five kills and an .833 (5-0-6) attacking percentage while senior middle hitter Tom McCaffrey (Massapequa, NY) also recorded five kills in the win.
The Mustangs will host GNAC foe Johnson & Wales University Thursday evening with game time slated for 7:00 p.m.
