HASTINGS TALLIES GAME-HIGH 14 KILLS, MUSTANGS DOWNED 3-0

Thursday, March 8, 2012 (Nashua, New Hampshire) - The Mount Ida College men's volleyball program fell Thursday night in Nashua, New Hampshire to hosting non-league foe Daniel Webster College downed 3-0 by scores of 12-25, 19-25 18-25.  The Mustangs drop their eighth straight loss slumping to an overall record of 1-13 remaining at 0-4 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference play. 

Mount Ida men's volleyball was led by junior hitter Spencer Hastings (Orlando, FL/Timber Creak) with 14 kills on 37 attempts with only five errors along with four digs defensively.  Sophomore hitter Nick Schibi (Torrington, CT/O. Wolcott Regional) chipped in four kills on 11 attempts while junior setter Ricky Olibeira (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford) dished out 11 assists.  Senior hitter Franklin McCaffrey (East Greenwich, RI/East Greenwich) added three kills and seven assists respectively. 

For the visitor's freshman Joel Hendrix (Keneohe, HI) notched 11 kills while sophomore Joe Walz (East Longmeadow, MA) and senior Chris Shannon (Ronkonkoma, NY) added eight each.  Eric Smith (Clay, N.Y.) added five kills, eight digs and nine assists and Kyle Clement (Weymouth, Mass.) dished off 19 assists.

The Eagles never trailed in the opener, hitting .650 (15-2-20) as Walz and Hendrix knocked down five kills apiece, offsetting five from Hastings. A Hendrix kill gave DWC the lead for good at 4-3 and the Eagles took control with an 8-0 run behind eight points at the service line including two aces from David Miller (Eldersburg, MD) that turned an 11-8 lead to 19-8 and back-to-back kills from Miller and Hendrix later closed out the 13-point win.

DWC jumped out to an 8-3 lead to start the second and never led by more than six, hitting .219 as a team. Hendrix again knocked down five kills in the set while Shannon registered four. Hastings again led the Mustangs with five.

Trailing by five late, Mount Ida was aided by two Eagle errors and a Hastings kill to close the gap to 22-19 but a Walz kill followed by Hendrix's fifth of the set helped close out the 25-19 win.

The third set saw 11 ties and five lead changes with Mount Ida holding the lead as late as 14-12 after one of Hastings' four kills in the set, but the Eagle answered with a 5-0 run behind a Clement kills and three aces from Walz to take the lead for good. Leading 21-18 DWC closed it out behind kills from Shannon and Casey Monahan for the 25-18 final.

The Mustangs are off until March 20th when they visit Emmanuel College in a GNAC matchup at 7:00 p.m.
