Wednesday, February 22, 2012 (Newton, Massachusetts) - Behind a 16 kill performance from senior McCoy Arnoux (Brockton, MA/Brockton), the Mount Ida College men's volleyball team captured their first victory of the 2012 spring season under the direction of first year Head Coach Craig Martin besting visiting non-league foe Lesley University Wednesday evening in Newton, Massachusetts by a score of 3-1 (25-17, 21-25, 25-9 and 25-18).
The Mustangs came out of the gate snatching game one 27-17 only to fall in game two 21-25. Mount Ida came back in the final two sets to eventually solidify the win with 25-9 and 25-18 wins for the 3-1 victory.
The hosts snap a five-game losing streak to begin the season improving to an overall record of 1-5 remaining at 0-2 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play. The Lynx fall to 1-7 for the year with a New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) slate of 1-2.
Along with his career-high 16 kills, Arnoux added two solo blocks as well wrapping up an impressive individual performance. Junior hitter Spencer Hastings (Orlando, FL/Timber Creak) added 13 kills and six service aces in the victory while sophomore hitter Nick Schibi (Torrington, CT/O. Wolcott Regional) chipped in three kills. Junior setter Ricky Oliveira (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford) dished out 34 assists and 13 digs respectively.
The Lynx were led by junior Max Hoevenaar (Orlando, FL/Castle Christian Academy) with six kills, six solo blocks, eight digs and a service ace. Sophomore Melvin Morales (Chelsea, MA/Chelsea) chipped in three assists as well.
Mount Ida will head to the annual Bard College Tournament this Friday and Saturday in New York.
