MEN'S VOLLEYBALL FALLS TO VISITING WILDCATS 3-0

The Mount Ida College men's volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (21-30, 10-30, and 17-30) shutout to visiting Northeast Collegiate Volleyball Association (NECVA) Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) division opponent Johnson & Wales University in Newton, Massachusetts.  The Mustangs fall to 4-8 overall, 2-4 in the GNAC division while the Wildcats improve to 5-9 on the year, 4-4 in conference competition.    

The Mustangs hung tough in game one holding on until the Wildcats took over and captured the game one victory to go ahead 1-0 in the match.  Game two was completely different with the visitors halting the hosts to 10 points winning 30-10 to go up 2-0 in the match.  Johnson & Wales mopped up the shutout snatching the 17-30 game three win and the 3-0 match blanking. 

Mount Ida was led by senior captain Bryan McMenamin (Warminster, PA/William Tennent) with eight kills, eight digs, two assists, and a block assists.  Sophomore Thomas Belton (Springfield, MA/Springfield Central) led the Mustangs in the offensive attack with 11 kills, two solo blocks, and three block assists.  Sophomore Gary Alvarez (Springfield, MA/Springfield Central) dished out 20 assists and eight digs as well.

The Wildcats saw outstanding individual performances from freshman Peter Yanakiev (Varna, Bulgaria) with 12 kills and eight service aces.  Senior Sean Lauro (West Roxbury, MA) and sophomore Eric Minnich (Concord, CA) combined for 22 kills with Minnich notching eight blocks. 

The Mustangs will stay home and host NECVA GNAC division foe Emmanuel College starting at 7:00 p.m.
