The Mount Ida College men's volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (19-30, 12-30, and 19-30) loss to visiting Northeast Collegiate Volleyball Association (NECVA) Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) division rival Lasell College Tuesday night at the Mount Ida Athletic Center. The Mustangs fall to 3-6 on the year and 2-3 in the GNAC while the Lasers improve to 8-6, 4-2 in conference competition.
It was back and forth for the beginning of game one with the Mustangs holding a small three point advantage up 13-10 after an error by Lasell. The Lasers called a timeout after an early surge by Mount Ida attempting to turn their fate around. Apparently the pep talk by Coach Mytro was inspiring because the visitors mounted an 11-1 run to pull ahead 20-14. The hosts didn't have much of an answer only scoring five more points while the Lasers cruised to the 30-19 victory in game one leading 1-0 in the match.
Lasell did not trail once in game two opening with a 7-5 lead after a couple of Mount Ida errors. The Lasers followed with back-to-back 6-0 runs to go ahead by 15 points leading 21-7 after a hitting error by Thomas Belton (Springfield, MA/Springfield). The Mustangs could only muster five more points in game two while the visitors powered an offensive strike to finish off the set. Lasell eventually captured the victory in game two by a score of 30-12 leading the match 2-0.
Mount Ida kept pace for a short period of time down 5-3 early in game three trying to prevent the shutout. The Lasers shifted into overdrive pulling ahead 13-8 after a slew of Mustang errors. The visitors maintained an eight point advantage for the rest of game three and eventually closed out the 30-19 victory and the 3-0 shutout in the match, good for their eighth win.
Freshman Geoff Carlson (Falls Village, CT/Housatonic Valley) got his first start of the season and notched two solo blocks while McMenamin tallied five digs.
The Mustangs will travel to MIT this Saturday for their second tri-match of the season against MIT and Southern Vermont starting at 1:00 p.m.
