Zimmerman Hat Trick Paces Cadets Past Mustangs

Zimmerman Hat Trick Paces Cadets Past Mustangs

NORTHFIELD, Vt. -- The Mount Ida College men's soccer team dropped their fifth consecutive Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) contest last night as they were handed a 4-0 defeat at the hands of the Cadets of Norwich University.

Cadet senior Jacob Zimmerman (Litchfield, N.H.) tallied his third career hat trick and moved him to 48 career goals, leaving him just two shy of tying Sani Siric ('05) for third on the all-time list.

Zimmerman opened the scoring in the 23rd minute when he got a piece of a cross from Moab Schiers (South Weber, Utah) with his right foot that redirected the ball down and off the right post before bouncing into the back of the net.

The senior increased the lead to 2-0 in the 40th minute, capitalizing on a Mount Ida defender misplaying a ball, scooting in from the right side and burying a shot into the corner of the net for his eighth goal of the season and second of the game.

The Cadets added two more insurance markers in the final eight minutes with Gleadle notching his third of the season in the 83rd minute and then Zimmerman completing the hat trick in the 87th minute off a perfect pass from Colin Lozito (Wilmington, Vt.).

With the victory, Norwich improved to 7-4-2 overall and 4-0-2 in GNAC play. The Cadets have won five of their last six games and now head into a huge showdown on Saturday with undefeated and first place Saint Joseph's (Maine). The Cadets trail Saint Joseph's by four points as they have 14 to the Monks' 18.

Senior goalkeeper Billy Whaley (Northfield, Vt.) made three saves, including a terrific sprawling save on Mustang Christian Martins (Westbrook, Conn.) to tap the ball over the cross bar and preserve his fourth shutout of the season. He improved to 5-1-0 on the year and lowered his goals against average to 0.82. Riley Ford (Guilderland, N.Y.) made five saves in ninety minutes of play for Mount Ida while Juan Brenes (Santo Domingo, D.R.) had a team high four shots.

Norwich snapped a three-game winless streak vs. Mount Ida with the victory. Last year, Mount Ida beat the Cadets 3-2 in overtime and then won 1-0 the year before. The Cadets have scored at least three goals in six of their last seven games.

The Mustangs are back in GNAC action on Saturday when they travel to cross town rival Lasell College with kickoff set for 12:00. Norwich will face Saint Joseph's (Maine) at 1:00 on Saturday as well.
