NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mount Ida College men's soccer team played to a scoreless draw with the Mariners of Mitchell College on Wednesday afternoon after the game was delayed due to weather with about fifteen minutes left to play in regulation.
With the draw, the Mustangs record stands at 3-2-1 while Mitchell is still looking for their first win of the season at 0-3-1.
The match was halted late in the second half due to lightning, with both teams retreating to the locker room for safety. The final 15 minutes were never played as darkness set in before the game could re-start.
Mitchell held a slight edge in shots (10-8) in a contest that produced few scoring chances for either side. Mount Ida goalkeeper Riley Ford (Guilderland, N.Y.) made two saves while Mitchell's Romer Ochoa (Uncasville, Conn.) and Seth Strader (Preston, Conn.) combined for three.
The best scoring chance for the Mustangs came in the 11th minute when Juan Brenes (Santo Domingo, D.R.) drilled a shot off the crossbar. Mitchell's best opportunity came in the 58th minute off a restart from midfield. The Mariners served the ball into the box and found Andris Vital (Norwich, Conn.) open for a good look at the far post. He attempted to chip a shot over Ford in goal but saw the ball sail over the crossbar.
Brenes led all Mustangs with two shots while six others managed one shot throughout the contest while Mitchell held a slight advantage in corner kicks (4-2).
The Mustangs will return home to the confines of Alumni Field on Saturday, September 17th against Anna Maria with kickoff slated for 1:00 PM. Mitchell will next host a familiar foe of the Mustangs in Albertus Magnus on Wednesday, September 21 at 3:00 PM.
