NEWTON, Mass. – Mount Ida College men's soccer has not conceded a goal in their first two games to open the 2016 season, and is now 2-0 after beating visiting Regis College 3-0 in their home opener on Monday afternoon at Alumni Field.
Juan Brenes (Santo Domingo, D.R.) scored twice more to bring his total to three goals on the season, and Riley Ford (Guilderland, N.Y.), made three saves to earn his second shutout of the season.
Freshman Michael Porcello (Abington, Mass.) got his first career collegiate goal five minutes before halftime for the Mustangs, who were outshot by Regis 12-9 but had a 7-3 edge in attempts on goal.
Brenes opened his account just seven minutes into play, dribbling through the Regis defense and curling the ball into the top left corner by the reach of senior goalkeeper Manny Santiago (Bristol, Conn.).
Porcello slammed home the ball from close in on the right side at the 40:50 mark, doubling the Mustang's score on an assist from junior Cody Seel (Petersburg, N.Y.).
It took just thirty-three seconds into the second half for Brenes to collect his brace. A long ball played from midfielder Alexis Flores (Central Falls, R.I.) found the feet of the speedy sophomore, and he raced down the left side and finished far post, and Mount Ida led 3-0.
Santiago made four stops in the loss for Regis. Senior Don Gomez (Lynn, Mass.) had two shots for the Pride, one of them on target that was stopped by Ford.
Mount Ida will head to Bristol, R.I. for their first out-of-state game of the year on Wednesday, a 7:00 pm nighttime affair against Roger Williams.
After being handed their first loss of the year, Regis (2-1) will try to regroup Wednesday when they head to New England College at 4:00 PM.
