KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Putting the finishing touches on his senior season, Mount Ida College forward Carlos Martinez (Chelsea, Mass.) has once again solidified his spot among the best players in the region.
Martinez was named as a member of the 2015 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) NCAA Division 3 All New England Third Team on Tuesday afternoon.
The reigning Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Offensive Player of the Year, Martinez scored ten goals this season, ending his career with 28 goals and 67 points, the all-time leader in both categories for the Mustangs.
He saved his best play for the critical junctures of the season, scoring in the last five games in which he appeared, including netting three goals in the conference tournament, earning him an All-Tournament team selection.
In addition to being named Player of the Year, Martinez earned his third consecutive GNAC First Team selection this season. He was also picked for last weekend's New England Intercollegiate Soccer League (NEISL) Senior All-Star game, in which he scored a goal while playing among many of the players also on NSCAA's All-New England teams.
One of just four members of the GNAC to be selected for this honor, Martinez joins first team midfielder Xavier Carty (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) of Johnson & Wales and two members of Norwich University, defender Christian Albrecht (Albuquerque, N.M.), who made Second Team, and fellow Third Team member in forward Jacob Zimmerman (Litchfield, N.H.).
The Mustangs had one of the best seasons in school history, recording a 12-7-1 record, the most wins since 2000. Their 7-1-1 record in GNAC play was the best conference mark for the program, and Mount Ida made their second straight trip to the GNAC quarterfinals and their second Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) DIII New England tournament appearance in three years.
