CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. -- Mount Ida College had their regular season finale on Wednesday afternoon spoiled by the weather and by host Pine Manor College, who scored 16 seconds into overtime to hand the Mustangs a 2-1 defeat in men's soccer at Hedley Field.
A first half goal by senior Luke Pugsley (Milton, Mass.) couldn't stand up for Mount Ida, who drop to 11-5-1 on the year and will now try to regroup before Sunday, when they host Lasell College at Alumni Field at 1:00 pm in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) quarterfinal game.
The Gators get a win in their 2015 finale to end their year with a 10-7-1 record, stopping a three-game Mount Ida win streak with a goal in the 62nd minute to tie the game and the decisive strike in the extra period, which came from freshman Jose Corrales (El Paso, Texas).
Pugsley gave the Mustangs the lead fifteen minutes into the game with his second goal of the year, but freshman Kenardo Dwyer (Bloomfield, Conn.) equalized for the Gators just after the hour mark on an unassisted strike into the right corner, beating Mount Ida sophomore Riley Ford (Guilderland, N.Y.), who made two saves but falls to 9-5-1 in between the pipes.
Dwyer assisted on Corrales's game-winner for Pine Manor, who outshot the Mustangs 12-11, had an 8-3 edge in corner kicks and got three saves from sophomore goalie Oscar Estrada (North Port, Fla.).
This was the first ever meeting between the two programs, with Pine Manor in just their second season as a varsity men's soccer program.
