Worcester, Mass. – Visiting Mount Ida College had their six-match winning streak stopped on Wednesday night by host Clark University, who earned a 2-1 victory in a non-league men's soccer tilt at Granger Soccer Turf.
Mount Ida had been unbeaten in their last seven matches, and now sees their record slip to 7-3-1.
The Cougars (3-7-1) snapped a six-match losing streak of their own by scoring in the 84th minute, producing an identical to-the-minute outcome as last year's meeting between the teams.
Freshman Juan Brenes (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) scored the lone Mustang goal and now has points in four straight games while he enjoys the honor of reigning Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Rookie of the Week.
Clark got on the board first when Zack Blais (Tiverton, R.I.) found himself alone at the top of the box on the right hand side and fired a blast the Mustang netminder Riley Ford (Guilderland, N.Y.) couldn't handle and it found its way to the back of the net for his fifth marker of the year.
Mount Ida literally responded seconds later as off the center touch Brenes raced up the left flank, beat a pair of defenders along the way and let loose a shot that tucked into the lower right corner for the equalizing goal less than ten seconds after Blais had put the Cougars ahead. The goal was the team-leading seventh of the year for the rookie.
Clark broke the 1-1 tie when Ethan Ziemba (Glen Gardner, N.J.) corralled a ball deep in the Mustangs' zone and found Alberto Polo-Herrera (Arlington, Va.) who had space to take a touch and launch a shot that sailed over the outstretched arms of Ford and into the back of the net at 83:05.
Clark outshot the Mustangs 23-9 and held a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Ford made five stops in net for the Mustangs, while Connor Maguire (Dunstable, Mass.) turned aside four shots in his 90 minutes of action to collect the victory.
Both teams are back in action with home conference matches on Saturday. Mount Ida hosts Albertus Magnus at 3:00 p.m., while the Cougars entertain NEWMAC rival Babson at 1:00 p.m.
