NEWTON, Mass. – Mount Ida College set single-game records for goals, assists, points and shots on Wednesday evening as they defeated visiting Wheelock College 10-0 in non-conference men's soccer action at Alumni Field.
Freshman Juan Brenes (Santo Domingo, D.R.) scored just the eighth hat trick in school history, and the first since 2009, to help Mount Ida extend their win streak to five games (6-2-1).
The Mustangs fired a program-high 51 shots and set a new school record with 7 assists and 27 points.
Sophomore Cody Seel (Petersburg, N.Y.), junior Vlasi Duni (Peabody, Mass.) and freshman Jordain Williams (Colchester, Vt.) each had a goal and an assist in the win for the Mustangs, who are now unbeaten in their last seven contests.
Brenes needed just 2:00 to slot home his first goal and the eventual game-winner on a feed from Seel at the near post as the freshman forward opened his account en route to the first three-goal performance by a Mount Ida player since Will Daniels on September 12, 2009 against Rivier, the Mustang's next opponent.
Senior Shawn Bernardo (Peabody, Mass.) added a header off a corner from newly named Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Rookie of the Week Alexi Flores (Central Falls, R.I.) five minutes later, and Billy Zeba (Lexington Park, Md.) rifled home his second goal of the year at 9:31.
Brenes completed his hat trick with a brace of goals in the first five minutes of the second half, taking the team lead in goals with six now on the season. He dribbled into the box and finished in the far corner of the net in the 47th minute, and then three minutes later headed in a cross from a JT Yager (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) corner kick, of which the Mustangs had a 12-1 advantage.
Williams and Seel scored five minutes apart, both on rebounds, within the hour mark, and Duni got on the board in the 74th minute on a feed from Julio Barroso (Central Falls, R.I.).
Rob McClafferty (Abington, Mass.) and Corey Zegarzewski (Hope Valley, R.I.) capped the scoring with their first goals of the season, scoring just 21 seconds apart as the Mustangs eclipsed the 20 points, 7 goals and 6 assists that were previous program highs from an October 13, 2001 game against Becker. Freshman Brandon Duhaime (Milford, Conn.) earned his first collegiate points with a helper on McClafferty's goal.
Sophomore Jordan Bernard (Westbrook, Conn.) made 12 saves in goal for Wheelock.
Freshman Antonio Chavderov (New Port Richey, Fla.) fired both of the Wildcat's shots, but neither of them were on target, as Mount Ida sophomore Riley Ford (Guilderland, N.Y.) did not need to make a stop to record the second shutout of the season for the Mustangs.
The Mustangs return to Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Saturday evening when they host Rivier University at 6:30 PM at Alumni Field.
Wheelock (0-4) looks for their first win on Saturday when they open up New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) play at home against Elms at noon.
