NEWTON, Mass. – With forty-one seconds to play in Friday evening's men's soccer contest and Mount Ida College knotted at one with Lesley University, senior Luke Pugsley (Milton, Mass.) stood over the ball at the penalty spot.
Then, in the blink of an eye, it was over – Pugsley had scored, his first goal of the year, the remaining time had run off the clock, and Mount Ida had earned a hard-fought 2-1 win over the Lynx, helping them even their record at 1-1.
In an entertaining and competitive game, Pugsley's strike gave the Mustangs a well-deserved goal in the second half, in which they outshot their opponents 9-5, with six of those attempts on target.
The teams each had seven shots in the first half, and both Mount Ida sophomore Riley Ford (Guilderland, N.Y.) and Lesley senior Chase Donley (Elizabethtown, Pa.) had four saves before the break, so it should come as no surprise that the teams were level at a goal apiece after forty-five minutes.
Mustang sophomore Billy Zeba (Lexington Park, Md.) scored his first collegiate goal after missing all of last year with an injury. Zeba needed just under seven minutes into the action before he struck in from the left side and beat Donley on the near post to give Mount Ida a 1-0 lead.
The feed came from senior Carlos Martinez (Chelsea, Mass.), who had a team-high four shots on goal and was taken down to win the penalty that Pugsley slammed home.
Unfortunately for the Mustangs, their lead was short lived, as less than a minute later senior Ryan Richardson (Santa Barbara, Calif.) headed home a rebound for his first goal of the season.
Ford made four saves in the game to earn his first collegiate win, while Donley made eight stops, but, like the Lynx, dropped to 0-2 on the year.
Mount Ida takes the weekend to recover before travelling to Regis on Monday's Labor Day holiday for their first road test of the year, a 1:00 pm contest against the Pride.
Conversely, the Lynx play their home opener on Monday night when they welcome in Emmanuel at 8:00 pm.
