Mustangs Can’t Break Through Hawks in Season Opening Nightcap

NEWTON, Mass. – A doubleheader at Alumni Field on opening day of the 2015 season ended with the Mount Ida College men's soccer team dropping a 2-0 decision to visiting Roger Williams University in a non-conference affair under the lights.

The teams went to halftime in a scoreless tussle, with chances few and far between, but the Hawks outshot Mount Ida 10-2 in the second half and scored in the 51st and 84th minutes to escape Newton with the victory.

Mount Ida sophomore Riley Ford (Guilderland, N.Y.) stopped three Hawks shots in the loss, while Hawks junior Carsten Fredrickson (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) needed just one save, off the foot of Tyler Grothusen (Ramsey, N.J.), who found himself one on one with the keeper in the first half after the ball was played in by Carlos Martinez (Chelsea, Mass.).

John McCarthy (Torrington, Conn.) notched the first goal of the year just five minutes after half, slamming home a cross from Sean Janson (Avon, Conn.) into the back of the net.

The sophomore Janson picked up his first point of the year with the assist.

With the Mustangs, who were outshot 12-3 in the game, looking to find an equalizer, Roger Williams senior James Sheldon (Amherst, N.H.) pounced on a loose ball with ten minutes to play and slotted the insurance goal past Ford.

Roger Williams had a 9-5 edge in corner kicks, earning seven of them in the second half as the field tilted in their favor.

Another home game under the lights awaits the Mustangs (0-1), who welcome in Lesley University on Friday at 7:00 pm.

Roger Williams (1-0) will host their own kick-off tournament this weekend, starting on Saturday when they host Fitchburg State at 11:00 am.
