Mustangs Judge Themselves Against #3 Brandeis

WALTHAM, Mass. — In their final regular season game of 2014, Mount Ida travelled to nearby Brandeis University and suffered a 5-0 defeat to the Judges, who are ranked #3 by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and #5 in the country by D3soccer.com.

The Mustangs (8-8-1) will turn their attentions to the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) postseason tournament, which they will open play in on Saturday afternoon at Albertus Magnus (1:30 pm).

Brandeis, who has allowed just three goals, collected their 13th clean sheet of the season and improve to 15-1 on the year, matching their 1982 and 1985 squads for the best starts to a season.

Brandeis senior midfielder Andrew Bennie (Plymouth, Mass.) delivered the eventual game-winner in the 18th minute when he collected a ball just outside the box and struck a laser past Mustang senior goalie Mat Pils (Monroe, Conn.), who made five stops in the loss.

In the 29th minute, Brandeis senior Tyler Savonen (Orleans, Mass.) continued his climb up the Judges' career scoring list. Savonen put a head to sophomore midfielder Josh Ocel's (North Attleboro, Mass.) corner kick and scored his ninth goal of the season and 35th of his career. The assist was Ocel's team-leading seventh of the season.

Brandeis scored an own goal in the 30th minute, when sophomore Mike Lynch (Weymouth, Mass.) crossed a short corner that was deflected in by a Mount Ida defender.

The final two goals came off the foot of junior forward Chris Bradley (East Brunswick, N.J.). In the 34th minute, he took advantage of keeper misplay and found himself with a wide-open net. Finally, in the 82nd minute, he made a nice run along the goal line, beat a defender and chipped the ball over Pils for his second career multi-goal game.

Brandeis senior Joe Graffy (Concord, N.H.) made one save for the Judges, while junior Josh Hacunda (Hopkinton, Mass.) cleared a ball off the line late in the game, as the Mustangs got off four shots in the game.

Mount Ida freshman Rob McClafferty (Abington, Mass.) also had a great look at goal in the first half, but sent his attempt just wide left of the post.

Brandeis concludes their regular-season with a three-match University Athletic Association (UAA) road trip, starting at Washington University in St. Louis on Friday at 6 p.m. (5 Central).
