Martinez’s Double Leads Comeback, But Mustangs Fall Short at Emerson

BOSTON, Mass. – Carlos Martinez (Chelsea, Mass.) scored a pair of goals in the second half to erase a 2-0 deficit, but hosts Emerson scored in the 75th minute to take a 3-2 win over Mount Ida in physical and tightly contested non-conference men's soccer action on Wednesday evening at Rotch Field.

The loss snapped Mount Ida's two-game win streak and dropped the Mustangs to 3-4-1 on the year, while with the win the Lions improve to 4-3.

After falling behind by a goal just under seven minutes into the game and trailing 2-0 at halftime, the visitors pulled a goal back in the 58th minute when Martinez struck from the penalty spot for the third game in a row after a foul in the box by the Lions.

Martinez collected his brace and tied the game seven minutes later off of a free kick just outside the box. Teammate Elias Mejia (Freehold, N.J.) took a touch of the ball before Martinez, the reigning Great Northeast Athletic Confernece (GNAC) Player of the Week, blasted it off of the post and into the top right corner of the net for his fifth goal of the season.

Emerson got their game-winner from Adam Halliday, who struck on an unassisted goal by blasting a rebound into the back left corner, past Mount Ida goalkeeper Mat Pils (Monroe, Conn.), who made five saves.

Pils's counterpart, Carter Bowers, made just one stop and allowed two goals, but collected the victory for the Lions.

The first half saw Emerson outshoot their opponents 8—3, and the Lions broke through in the seventh minute of action with a ball that deflected to the foot of Austin Alphonse.

Ole Eriksen gave Emerson a cushion in the 20th minute as he beat out the Mustangs defense to a long ball down the field and dropped it into the top left corner of the goal.

For the game, the Lions had a 14-10 shot advantage and a slim 5-4 edge in corner kicks.

Eriksen and Jon Havens had opportunities to give the home team the lead back after Martinez's double, but both had their attempts stopped by Pils before Halliday's game-winner found the back of the net.

The Mustangs will pick up their GNAC schedule again this weekend, as they travel to Anna Maria for a 12:00 pm matchup Saturday afternoon.

The Lions will be home again this Saturday as they prepare to face New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foe Springfield at noon.
