Mustangs Grind Out Double Overtime Shutout Under the Lights

NEWTON, Mass. – Sophomore Carlos Martinez (Chelsea, Mass.) converted a penalty kick opportunity in the second overtime to help Mount Ida collect a 1-0 victory over Newbury College in non-conference men's soccer action on Wednesday night at Alumni Field.

Junior goalkeeper Matt Pils (Monroe, Conn.) and the Mustang's defense collected their third shutout of the season, as Mount Ida snapped a three-game losing streak and improved to 2-3-1.

Martinez led a Mount Ida attack that fired 28 shots, 10 of them on goal, and had a plethora of chances to break open a scoreless game, but could not convert through the first 104 minutes.

Freshman Tyler Grothusen (Ramsey, N.J.) had one of the best chances in the first half for Mount Ida, getting his head on one of the Mustang's seven corner kicks, but the ball clanged off of the underside of the crossbar and, despite looking like a goal at first, came back out into the field of play.

Just moments later, Newbury's Alex Davis (Gloucester, Mass.) would see his attempt clang off of the post at the other end of the field.

The home team hit the woodwork again at the tail end of the first overtime period, with this time Joseph Ramsay (Peabody, Mass.) finding himself denied despite having beat the keeper.

Junior Peter Sliva (Glens Falls, N.Y.) and junior Oscar Lemus (Revere, Mass.) also had promising looks at goal during the run of play.

Martinez finally broke the deadlock and delivered the victory with his second goal of the year, after he was brought down during a speedy run into the right-hand side of the box.

Martinez beat freshman goalkeeper Cody Nash-Glibney (South Burlington, Vt.), who made ten saves in the defeat.

Nighthawks senior Bryan Barrios (Central Falls, R.I.) forced the only save out of Pils. Barrios had three attempts, while freshman forward Ethan Forrest (East Bridgewater, Mass.) had two of Newbury's seven shots.

Mount Ida, who has conceded 7 goals in six games this year, improves to 4-1 all-time against the Nighthawks, and have now beaten them by a goal in two straight seasons.

The Mustangs will return to Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Sunday afternoon when they welcome Rivier to Alumni Field for a 12:00 pm game.

Newbury (2-5), who just started a four game-road trip with their visit to Newton, will be in Boston to play Emmanuel on September 24th at 7:00 pm.
