Thursday, September 27, 2012 (Newton, Massachusetts) - The Mount Ida College men's soccer team recorded their second straight win with a 2-1 victory over visiting non-league foe Newbury College Thursday afternoon on Alumni Field in Newton, Massachusetts. Mustang freshman forward James Ames (West Hartford, CT/Conrad) scored for the second straight game helping the hosts improve to an overall record of 4-4-1 (2-3-0 GNAC). The Nighthawks fall to the same yearly slate as the hosts (4-4-1) and have yet to compete in a New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) contest.
The first half went back-and-forth until Mount Ida struck in the 39th minute of play on a well-placed through ball by junior midfielder Tim Gil (Lowell, MA/Essex Agricultural & Tech) to the middle of the box. Mustang junior Steve MacDonald (Medford, MA/Arlington Catholic) deposited a shot into the lower left corner propelling the hosts to a 1-0 advantage.
After the midway point, Mount Ida freshman midfielder Mario Pecirep (Pula, Croatia) fired a shot towards net from outside the box that Ames flicked with his noggin over the goaltender's head for the 2-0 lead with no answer from the Nighthawks.
The visitors finally got on the board in the 88th minute on a shot into the lower right hand corner from junior Bryan Barrios (Central Falls, RI/Central Falls) on a feed from senior midfielder Shaundize Mossavizadeh (Winchester, MA/Winchester). It was too late at that point with no chance for Newbury to make a comeback rewarding the Mustangs the 2-1 non-conference win.
Mount Ida goaltender Matt Pils (Monroe, CT/Masuk) recorded his fourth victory of the season stopping four Nighthawk shots. Senior net minder Jeremy Bergeron (Fitchburg, MA/Montachusett Regional Tech) made five saves for the visitors.
The Mustangs will travel to non-league Eastern Nazarene College Tuesday evening with game time slated for 6:00 p.m. Newbury will travel to UMASS-Boston the same day in a non-conference bid with kickoff at 3:30 p.m.
