Wednesday, September 19, 2012 (Newton, Massachusetts) - Trailing 1-0 at halftime, a resilient Mount Ida College men's soccer team recorded three goals in the second stanza en route to a 3-1 non-league victory over visiting Regis College Wednesday evening on Alumni Field.
Freshman Carlos Martinez (Chelsea, MA/Chelsea) and sophomore Ryan Gray (Bayport, NY/Bayport-Blue Point) put on a show offensively with Martinez tallying the first two scores and Gray notching the final goal for the Mustangs solidifying the win.
Mount Ida improves to an overall record of 2-3-1 remaining at 1-2-0 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play while the visitors fall to 2-6 for 2012 and have yet to compete in a New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) contest.
The hosts came out flat in the early stages of the game with the Pride capitalizing in the seventh minute of the first half on an unassisted score from senior forward (Bellingham, MA/Bellingham) finishing off a breakaway opportunity depositing a shot in the right corner for the early 1-0 lead.
It went back and forth for the remainder of the opening stanza with neither team able to convert any attempt on net heading into the break with a combined eight shots for the half (MIC-5, RC-3).
Mount Ida third year Head Coach Joseph Campbell was clearly disappointed with his team's effort to start the match and light a fire underneath all of them heading into the second half.
The Mustangs did not surrender one shot in the second half stymieing the Pride offensively. The hosts proceeded to click on all cylinders led by Martinez and Gray along with a strong defensive effort by Mount Ida to tally the win.
In the 50th minute Martinez deposited a shot into the right corner of the net on a perfectly placed ball to the middle of the box from Gray tying the contest at 1-1.
Martinez struck again on a dazzling display of skill in the box juggling the ball around two Regis defenders finishing off the Sports Center like goal chipping the ball over the goaltender to give his squad the 2-1 advantage in the 58th minute.
Gray put the match out of reach for the Mustangs on a hustle play in the 73rd minute on his own rebound off the post that was fired past Pride goaltender, junior Stefan Todorovic (Los Angeles, CA/Notre Dame), to seal off the 3-1 non-league victory. It would be Gray's first goal of the 2012 season also adding an assist as well on Martinez's first score.
Mount Ida outshot the visitors 14-3 for the contest. Mustang keeper Matt Pils (Monroe, CT/Masuk) didn't see a ton of action recording a surprising zero save with no attempts by the Pride in the second half. For Regis, Todorovic stopped two host shots taking the loss.
The Mustangs will travel to GNAC foe and neighboring rival Lasell College Saturday afternoon with game time slated for 12:00 p.m. The Pride will face NECC opponent Elms College at home the same day starting at 2:00 p.m.
