MARTINEZ LIFTS MUSTANGS OVER SUFFOLK FOR 2-1 VICTORY

Mount Ida College men's soccer freshman midfielder Carlos Martinez (Chelsea, MA/Chelsea) gave the Mustangs a 2-1 advantage in the 74th minute of play against visiting Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) foe Suffolk University Wednesday evening on Alumni Field never looking back capturing a 2-1 league bid for their first win of the season.

The hosts improve to 1-2-1 overall with a GNAC slate of 1-1-0 while the visitors drop their first league contest of the year falling to 3-2-0 for the season and 1-1-0 in conference competition.

Mount Ida got on the board early in the 6th minute of play on Mustang sophomore forward Michael Templeton's (Charlestown, NH/Fall Mountain) first score of the year on a feed from junior Carlos Rojas (Stamford, CT/Stamford) for the 1-0 lead.

The action went back and forth for the remainder of the first half with neither team able to score before the break.

Mount Ida made it 2-0 in the 74th minute on Martinez's second goal of the year off a dish from sophomore Peter Sliva (Glens Falls, NY/Glens Falls) off a volley that was lasered into the top left corner.

The visitors made it 2-1 in the 85th minute of play on an unassisted goal from freshman Eduardo Li (Curridabat, Costa Rica) but it wasn't enough to mount a late comeback with the Mustangs closing out the contest 2-1 for the GNAC victory.

Mount Ida net minder Matt Pils (Monroe, CT/Masuk) saw all 90 minutes between the pipes adding six saves while Suffolk goaltender freshman Nicholas Chamma (Rio de Janero, Brazil) added four saves.

The Mustangs will host GNAC foe St. Joseph's College (ME) this Saturday with game time slated for 1:00 p.m.
