MEN'S SOCCER ENDS SEASON WITH 2-0 LOSS TO FALCONS

After a solid run through the 2011 season, the Mount Ida College men's soccer team fell in the quarterfinal round of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) tournament dropping a 2-0 bid to hosting Albertus Magnus College Monday afternoon in New Haven, Connecticut.

The Mustangs finish strong climbing out of a tough 1-14-1 record from last season finishing with a 7-10-1 overall record this year under the direction of Joseph Campbell through his second season at the helm.   It was the third time the men's soccer program has qualified for the conference tournament since moving to the GNAC in 2007 and the first time under the wing of second year head coach Joseph Campbell.

Mount Ida was only able to muster six shots on net two of which were on net while the hosts pounded the offensive side notching 17 total shots, eight between the pipes.

Albertus Magnus senior Jamal Howard (West Haven, CT) scored both Falcon goals to lift the hosts to its 15th victory of the season as the Falcons are undefeated in their last 15 games and move to 15-2-1.

Howard scored his 20th and 21st goals of the year as he leads the GNAC in that category. Howard's game winner came in the fourth minute, giving Albertus an early lead. He took a pass down field from defender Chris Long (West Haven, CT) and took the goalkeeper one-on-one before scoring.

Stephen Zapata (Hamden, CT) assisted on Howard's second goal of the contest in the 74th minute to record his NCAA-leading 20th assist of the season.

Mount Ida freshman goaltender Mat Pils (Monroe, CT/Masuk) denied six shots while Donato Piroscafo (Naugatuck, CT) faced two shots on net and made two saves for the Falcons in 90 minutes of play.
