MEN'S SOCCER SHARP IN 2-1 VICTORY OVER NIGHTHAWKS

The Mount Ida College men's soccer team continues to roll capturing their fourth consecutive win over hosting Newbury College in non-league action winning 2-1 Sunday afternoon in a come-from-behind victory.

Mount Ida freshman Gilberto Alvarenga (Marlborough, MA/Marlborough) registered a goal and an assist in the win.  The Mustangs improve to an overall record of 7-7 maintaining a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) slate of 4-4.  Second year head coach Joseph Campbell has guided the Mustangs to six more victories than last season.

Newbury jumped on the scoreboard early, pressuring the Mount Ida defense. Sophomore midfielder Bryan Barrios (Central Falls, RI) found junior midfielder Shaundize Moosavizadeh (Winchester, MA) 10 yards out, 16 minutes into the contest for the first score. It was the Winchester native's sixth goal of the season as he leads the Nighthawks with 13 points overall.

Nine minutes into the second period, Alvarenga knocked a penalty kick to the left of Nighthawk senior goalkeeper William McNally (Grafton, MA) to knot up the score at one a piece (1-1). From there the momentum had shifted in the direction of the Mustangs. The visitors kept the ball in Newbury's end from that point forward until Alvarenga connected with junior Mike Czorny  (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth) for the game-winner.

Mount Ida backup goalkeeper Joseph Casey (Merrimack, MA/Pentucket) saw his second game in net with one save.

The Mustangs will host GNAC foe Johnson & Wales University in a crucial match-up with playoff position implications; game time slated for 3:30 p.m. in Newton, Massachusetts.
