MEN'S SOCCER GETS DRENCHED BY VISITING NOR'EASTERS

The Mount Ida College men's soccer team dropped a 4-1 loss to visiting non-conference University of New England in Newton, Massachusetts this Tuesday.  The Mustangs fall to 1-4 overall, 1-0 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play while the Nor'easters improve to 3-1 and remain at 1-0 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC).

The Mustangs looked tired and flat right for the opening whistle to the final second of the contest.  UNE took the lead immediately in the 15th minute of play on an unassisted goal from Kiel Hiller (Galloway, NJ/Absegami) off a rebound that Mustang goalkeeper sophomore Steven Enright (South Kingston, RI/Prout) had trouble handling giving the visitors the 1-0 advantage.

Mount Ida never got anything going offensively with a total of eight shots for the entire game.  The Nor'easters kept the pressure on capitalizing again on a senior Dylan Saucier (Windham, NH/Windham) score fed on a cross from Hiller that Saucier poked into the right side of the net in the 38th minute of play in the first half.  The teams headed into halftime with UNE leading by a score of 2-0.

Around the 58th minute mark, the visitors added to their lead on an unassisted score by Nor'easter junior Cody Lapointe (Pownal, ME/Yarmouth) off a direct kick.  This gave the opposition the commanding 3-0 advantage with no sign of a comeback from Mount Ida.

The Mustangs caught a little luck towards the end of the second half in the 63rd minute of play off a direct kick by senior captain Leo Roy (Manchester, NH/Goffstown Area).  The shot was caromed off the foot of a UNE defender that launched the ball over Nor'easter goalkeeper Jon Planer's (Yarmouth, ME/Yarmouth) head into the right corner of the net giving the Mustangs their first score trailing 3-1.

The visitors sealed off the victory with their fourth goal of the game on another unassisted score this time by UNE senior Brian Cummings (Bow, NH/Bow) off a loose ball in front of the net.  Cummings fired the shot into the right corner for the 4-1 advantage and ultimately the victory.

Enright saw the first half of action between the pipes for Mount Ida giving up two goals and denying five shots.  He split time with freshman goalie Andrew Clark (Greenville, NY/Greenville) who got his first taste of college soccer today taking over in the second half notching five saves.  Planer played the entire clip for the Nor'easters with minimal action stopping two shots.

Mount Ida was completely outshot by their opponents at 24-8 along with UNE racking up 22 fouls to the Mustangs 10.  Mount Ida won the corner kick battle with seven while the Nor'easters were awarded four on the day.

The Mustangs will travel to GNAC foe Emmanuel College this coming Saturday starting at 1:00 p.m.
