In the 91st minute of the first overtime in a very physical battle, Suffolk University freshman Danny Lloyd (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) poked in the game winning goal in a 2-1 loss for the Mount Ida College men's soccer team in Newton, MA this Wednesday afternoon. The Mustangs, who hadn't lost in the past seven contests, drop their first Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) bid making their overall record to 6-3-3, 3-1-0 in conference play. The Rams improve to 3-6-0, 2-2-0 in the GNAC.
Mount Ida struck first in the opening of the second half on a corner kick that bounced off the head of freshman Michael Almeida (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth/Bishop Stang) in the front of the box for senior Matt Gill (Winfield, KS/Winfield/Garden City C.C.) to fire in from the six yard line. This would be Gill's first goal of the season giving the Mustangs the early 1-0 advantage in the 48th minute.
With fewer than 13 ticks to go, the Rams finally got on the board much like the Mustangs first goal off a corner kick that was squirting around the box. Suffolk junior Bernhard Lotterer (Lima, Peru) hammered it into the right side of the net, knotting the score at 1-1. After each squad exchanged a couple of chances a piece, the horn would sound with the game heading into extra time.
It didn't take long for the visitors to score on a quick give and go that was converted by Lloyd on a well fed ball in the middle of the box from Ram junior Nick Celia (Hanson, MA). Suffolk would head home with the 2-1 victory and their second conference win of the season.
This was an extremely physical game with a total of seven yellow cards that the official distributed among each team. The Mustangs outshot the Rams 18-12 including 15 offside calls by the visitors and zero by the hosts and a combined total of 45 fouls.
Mount Ida keeper Brian Leighton (Turner, ME/Leavitt Area) and Suffolk goalie Alex Capousis (Annapolis, MD) denied six shots a piece.
The Mustangs will head north to GNAC powerhouse Norwich University this Saturday starting at 3:00 p.m.
