The Mustangs Men’s Soccer team hosted Johnson and Wales
University on a sunny day on the campus of Mount Ida College this
Wednesday. The Wildcats would take the victory, bettering their
season record to 5-2-3, 4-0 in the GNAC while the Mustangs drop to
6-4-1, and 2-2 in the GNAC.
The Wildcats got it rolling midway through the first half with
24:38 remaining on a breakaway by senior Brian Souza (Providence,
RI). Souza got through the defense on a through ball beating
Mustangs keeper Brian Leighton (Turner, ME/Leavitt
Area) on the bottom right corner making it 1-0.
The visitors would add a second goal with 13:51 left in the first
on a rebounded head ball off the cross bar. Junior Nick
O’Rourke (Medway, MA) put his team up 2-0 with a well placed
ball in the top left hand corner of the net.
Mount Ida would come right back on a score of their own with 6:13
left in the first stanza on a well placed ball from the left side
by sophomore Chris Meuer (Warminster, PA/William
Tennent) to junior Matt Gill (Winfield,
KS/Winfield/Garden City C.C.) blasting it into the
bottom left corner. This would make it 2-1 going into the second
half, with the Mustangs gaining the momentum.
Johnson and Wales pulled away late in the second half coming off a
through ball by Sousa that sophomore Eric Flath (Warwick, RI)
converted into a goal by rocketing one past Leighton for the 3-1
lead that would hold up for the victory.
Wildcats goaltender Joe Ferraro (Freehold, NJ) ended the game with
2 saves while Leighton left with six for the Mustangs.
Mount Ida will travel to Emerson College on Saturday to continue
their GNAC schedule. They will start at 12:30 p.m.
