The Mount Ida College Men’s Soccer team hosted Great
Northeast Athletic Conference leader Norwich University on a cold
and overcast day on campus.
It was a tight game the entire first half and almost all of the
second with the score knotted at 0-0 with some great chances for a
score on both sides of the ball. Both goaltenders had their fair
share of outstanding saves including two by Mustang keeper
Brian Leighton (Turner, ME/Leavitt Area)
on close range shots that he smothered.
Norwich finally got on the board with 2:05 left in the second off a
rebound by junior Rob Harlow (West Springfield, MA/West
Springfield). It was a well crossed ball that Leighton gave a good
attempt at, but was unable to save it making it 1-0.
When everyone thought the game was over Senior captain
Greg Hagan (Weymouth, MA/Weymouth) had
other plans. Junior Brandon Chuba (Wallingford, CT/Mark
T. Sheehan) served a terrific ball off a direct kick
to Hagan who positioned himself perfectly in front of the net for
the head ball placing it into the top left corner to tie
it up at 1-1 sending it to overtime.
The game would end in a 1-1 tie with some stellar play on both
sides of the ball and up and down the field. Cadets goaltender Jake
Pagragan (Richland, ID/Harrison) had eight saves while Mustangs
keeper Leighton had outstanding game with 16 saves.
Mount Ida will host neighboring Lasell College this Sunday for a
1:00 p.m. start.
