Goalkeeper Brian Leighton (Turner, Maine/Leavitt
Area) posted his third career shutout, as the Mount
Ida College men’s soccer team edged Curry College 1-0 in
non-conference competition at the Mount Ida Athletic Stadium this
afternoon.
The sophomore made five saves to help the Mustangs to their first
win of the 2006 campaign.
Mount Ida struck for the contest’s lone goal in the 33rd
minute, when freshman Tim Hedrick (Killingworth,
Conn./Haddam-Killingworth) found the net for his
first collegiate goal. Senior Josh Belongie (Ashway,
R.I./Chariho Regional) got the play started with a
blast from the left side. After a diving save by Curry junior Clark
Zelazo (Palmer, Mass.), Hedrick picked up the loose ball and drove
it into the open net.
The Mustangs outshot Curry 19-13 in the match, including 10-4 in
the second half. Zelazo finished the match with eight saves for the
Colonels, who fell for the first time this season.
Mount Ida (1-1, 0-0 NAC) returns to action on Sunday, when its
hosts the Massachusetts Maritime Academy for an out-of-league
contest beginning at 1:00 p.m. Curry (2-1, 0-0 CCC) opens up its
Commonwealth Coast Conference schedule at home versus Roger
Williams University on Saturday at 11:00 a.m.
