Senior Josh Belongie (Ashway, R.I./Chariho
Regional) recorded a golden goal to propel the Mount
Ida College men’s soccer team to a 1-0 victory over the
Massachusetts Maritime Academy this afternoon in non-conference
action at the Mount Ida Athletic Stadium.
The Mustangs picked up their second straight 1-0 decision while
sending the Buccaneers to their first defeat of the 2006
campaign.
Belongie’s goal came just 2:23 into the first overtime period
after the team’s had battled to a scoreless tie for over 92
minutes. Junior Joe Kassoy (Glastonbury,
Conn./Glastonbury) got the play started with a lob
pass from around midfield. Belongie received the ball with his
right foot, dribbled around a Massachusetts Maritime defender and
beat sophomore goalkeeper Tim Meighan (East Bridgewater, Mass./East
Bridgewater) with a left footed strike from about ten yards out.
Both squads had numerous scoring opportunities during regulation
time.
The Buccaneers controlled the opening stanza, outshooting the hosts
13-5. From there, Mount Ida dominated the match. The Mustangs
peppered Meighan with eight shots on goal in the second half and
earned seven corner kick opportunities before the eventual
game-winner in overtime.
Mount Ida sophomore netminder Brian Leighton (Turner,
Maine/Leavitt Area) registered his second straight
shutout. He made seven saves, all in the first half. Meighan was
the tough luck loser despite stopping ten shots.
Mount Ida (2-1, 0-0 NAC) hits the road for a non-conference tilt at
Eastern Nazarene College on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. The Mustangs
return home on Wednesday, September 20 to take on Daniel Webster
College. Massachusetts Maritime (1-1, 0-0 MASCAC) returns to the
pitch on Friday at 7:00 p.m., when it visits the Coast Guard
Academy for a non-conference match.
