Freshman Ben Masse (Chicopee, Mass.) netted the eventual
match-winning goal, as the Elms College men’s soccer team
picked up a 2-1 victory over Mount Ida College in North Atlantic
Conference action at Leary Field this afternoon.
Mount Ida jumped out to an early lead, as senior Josh
Belongie (Ashaway, R.I./Chariho Regional) scored his
fifth goal of the season in the 12th minute.
Elms bounced back in the 15th minute, when, freshman Sean Moylan
(Chicopee, Mass.) netted his first goal of the season on a short
pass from junior Nda Kaslong (Jos, Nigeria).
The teams went scoreless until the 63rd minute. It was then that
Masse fired a shot past Mustangs sophomore netminder
Brian Leighton (Turner, Maine./Leavitt
Area) to put Elms in front 2-1. The Blazers
maintained their slim margin over the contest’s final 27
minutes to win their second match in a row.
Sophomore goalkeeper Nick Pellegrini (Ludlow, Mass.) turned aside 6
shots in the win for the hosts. Leighton finished with nine saves
for Mount Ida.
Mount Ida (6-4-1, 2-1-1 NAC) returns to action this weekend, when
it hosts Husson College and the Maine Maritime Academy for NAC
matches on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. The contests are each
slated to get underway at 3:00 p.m.
