NEW LONDON, Conn. -- Mount Ida College will play in the championship game at the Coaches vs Cancer Tip Off Tournament hosted by Connecticut College after an 83-73 win over Newbury College on Friday night.
The Mustangs (2-1) will play FDU Florham at 3:30 pm on Saturday, while Newbury (0-3) will play in the consolation game at 1:30 pm against the host Camels, who fell to the Devils by the same score in the first game of the tournament.
Jayson Clark (Austin, Texas) and John Oliver (N. Babylon, N.Y.) scored 16 points apiece, with Oliver's production coming off the bench. The Mustangs shot 51.7% from the field in the first half and took a 43-36 lead at the break thanks to ten first half points from Clark and a 2-2 shooting from behind the three-point line from sophomore Brendan Cunningham (Quincy, Mass.).
Clark made two triples in the first four minutes as the Mustangs opened the game on a 9-0 run and Mount Ida's lead hit double-digits at 13:02 on Cunningham's first three of the night. The Green and White never trailed in the game and led by as many as 16 at three different points of the second half.
Devin Johnson (Manchester, Conn.) scored 26 points and Kenny Ramos (Roxbury, Mass.) scored 20 points, but Newbury's other starters managed just two more points, as the Mustangs kept two Nighthawks starters off of the scoreboard.
Also in double figures for Mount Ida were Patrick McKearney (Avon, Conn.), who had 12 points and a team-high nine rebounds and Ethan Dujon (Warwick, R.I.), with 14 points.
Clark, Joey DeFillippi (Bristol, Conn.) and Kevin Conner (Mansfield, Mass.) each had three assistsa nd four rebounds, with DeFillippi adding eight points and Clark leading the team with three steals.
The two squads were even in the rebounding department with 37 apiece. Ramos completed a double-double for the Nighthawks with 14 boards.
Ceejae Carter (Dorchester, Mass.) was the most productive Nighthawk off the bench, adding nine points, four rebounds and a team-high four assists.
