Saturday, January 28, 2012 (Newton, Massachusetts) - The Mount Ida College men's basketball team fell to visiting Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) number one seed Albertus Magnus College Saturday afternoon by a score of 87-74 in a very physical contest that featured a combined 45 fouls and three technical fouls. Falcon senior Raymond Askew (Hamden, CT/Hamden) recorded his 2,000th point with 8:11 to go in the second half off two successful free throw attempts.
The Mustangs fall to an overall record of 6-11 slumping to a league slate of 3-7 while the Falcons remain near perfect for the season at 17-1 and an impressive 12-0 atop the GNAC standings.
Mount Ida was led by three starters in double figures led by senior guard Keith Jones (Boston, MA/Lake Brantley (FL)/Mass. Bay C.C.) with 19 points while fellow senior guard Isiah Benjamin (Windsor, CT/The Masters School) added 17 points on 5-10 shooting from the floor. Senior captains Joe Cabral (Walpole, MA/Walpole) and Travis Hillery (Tyngsboro, MA/Central Catholic) tallied 12 points each with Hillery grabbing eight caroms. Sophomore forward Kenny Jean (Dorchester, MA/Brighton) played a valuable 16 minutes chipping in eight points on 4-6 shooting.
The visitors were led by an impressive double-double by Askew notching 31 points and 11 boards while junior guard Arshad Jackson (Hartford, CT/Hartford Public) chipped in 17 points with four assists. Junior center Jefferson Lora (Bornx, NY/Lyman Hall) added 10 points and seven rebounds respectively.
The Mustangs will travel to Johnson & Wales University this coming Monday for more GNAC action with game time slated for 7:00 p.m.
