Mount Ida College men's basketball junior captain Isiah Benjamin (Windsor, CT/The Masters School) led all scorers with a game high 25 points but it wasn't enough while the Mustangs dropped their third consecutive Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) loss in a row to the hands of hosting Suffolk University Saturday afternoon in Boston, Massachusetts. The Mustangs fall to an overall record of 4-9 and drop to 1-4 in the conference standings.
Along with Benjamin, Junior Travis Hillery (Tyngsboro, MA/Central Catholic) finished the game with 15 points for the Mustangs and was the Mount Ida's leading rebounder with seven boards.
Sophomore Colin Halpin (Melrose, Mass.) finished the game with 17 points and seven rebounds, while sophomore Matt Pepdjonovic (Quincy, Mass.) posted another double-double with 16 points and 15 boards as the Rams pick up their third win of the season in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play.
Senior Allan Ray (Lynn, Mass.) connected on consecutive three-pointers to give the Rams their largest lead of the contest at 16 seven minutes into the second half to put the Rams up 52-36.
The Mustangs would chip away throughout the remainder of the period going on a 14-4 run over the course of four minutes to bring the game to 70-66 with two and a half minutes remaining.
Senior Mike Fleming (Exeter, N.H.) would hit a three point shot from the corner with 1:42 remaining to put the Rams up seven as the Mustangs could not score another point the remainder of the contest.
Mount Ida held the lead for the majority of the first half until late when Pepdjonovic would connect with 1:35 remaining in the half as Suffolk took the lead for the good. Benjamin scored 16 of his points in the opening period going 4-for-6 from the field, and finished the game a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line.
Suffolk held the edge in rebounds at 45-34, while shooting 52.5 percent from the field as a team.
