PROVIDENCE, RI – Junior Gabriella Catania (West Milford, NJ) factored into all three Johnson & Wales (RI) University goals as the Wildcats picked up a GNAC victory on Saturday taking down the visiting Mount Ida College Mustangs 3-1. The Mustangs fall to 7-8 overall and 2-5 in GNAC action, while the Wildcats move to 4-9 overall and 3-4 in conference play.
The Wildcats looked to attack from the start as they quickly put pressure on the Mustangs defense and looked to test goalkeeper Grace Ryan (Livermore Falls, ME) early in the contest. Ryan was able to stop the first three shots she saw, but the Wildcats were able to able to deflect one past Ryan off the stick of Catania for the early 1-0 lead. Mount Ida was able to put the Wildcats on their heels for the rest of the half and it looked like Ema Atherton (Sanborntown, NH) was about to even the score, but Wildcats goalkeeper Claire Nolan (West Bridgewater, MA) was able to make the save and the score at half remained 1-0 in favor of the home team.
Catania scored again in the 49th minute to put JWU up 2-0 when she tipped in Mackenzie Delaney's (Virginia Beach, Va.) through ball. The Mustangs were able to pick up the offensive intensity and finally broke through in the 51st minute. Cregan Callahan (Diamond Point, NY) was able to send a terrific ball through right to the stick of Lexi Minicucci (Westfield, MA), who found the back of the net for her 18th goal of the season. A final Wildcats goal off the stick of Giovanna Ciavardoni (Latham, NY) would seal the victory as the Mustangs were unable to overcome a 19-8 shot differential.
Mount Ida looks to get back in the win column on Saturday, as they take on Elms College at 7:00pm on Senior Day. The Wildcats go on the road Tuesday to take on Bridgewater State at 3:30 p.m. in non-conference action.
