Framingham, Mass. -- The Mount Ida College field hockey team won their fifth consecutive game in thrilling action on Thursday evening in overtime by defeating the hosting Rams of Framingham State by a final of 4-3.
With the victory, the Mustangs continue their best winning streak in team history by improving to (8-4, 1-2 GNAC) while eight wins is the most in team history as well. The Rams, drop to 2-10 on the year.
The Rams got on the board in the 13th minute when FSU converted on a penalty corner. Bailey Donelly (Framingham, Mass.) sent the corner into the top of the arc where Meaghann Ackerman (Littleton, Mass.) sent a screaming shot through traffic into the back of the cage.
Mount Ida evened the score in the 19th minute when Lexi Minicucci (Westfield, Mass.) gathered a deflected pass on a corner and sent in a laser past the Rams goalie.
Just a few moments later Patty Ryan (Livermore Falls, ME) gave the Mustangs the lead when she overpowered a Rams defender in front of the net to gather a loose ball and sent it home.
After both teams had opportunities to score in the second frame it was the Rams who finally were able to convert tying the game in the 55th minute. Sydney Buono (Ashburnham, Mass.) sent a strike from Jillian Kokernak (Worcester, Mass.) into the back of the net to knot the contest at two.
The Rams took the lead in the 65th minute when Donelly started a penalty corner, passed to Ackerman who sent a rocket that was tipped in front by Donelly.
The Mustangs answered just less than three minutes later on a corner of their own. Cregan Callahan (Diamond Point, N.Y.) sent a corner to Minicucci who beat the Rams keeper to her left side to tie the game back and force overtime.
The Mustangs struck early in overtime gaining possession while Melissa McNamara (Wilminton, Mass.) streaked down the middle of the field beating Ram defenders and eventually the keeper with just 17 seconds coming off the clock.
Grace Ryan (Livermore Falls, ME) made four saves in the win for Mount Ida while Haley Duggan (Framingham, Mass.) made seven stops in goal for the Rams.
The Rams return to action on Saturday, October 8th when they host the University of Southern Maine in a Little East Conference (LEC) matchup. The Mustangs will travel to Lasell on the same day in Great Northeast Athletic Conference Action (GNAC) action.
