NEWTON, Mass. – Mount Ida College scored a pair of goals in each half en route to a 4-1 victory over Rivier University to run their winning streak to three games and earn their first Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) field hockey win of the season.
Mount Ida (6-4, 1-2 GNAC) got four different scorers and took the lead on two occasions before adding a pair of insurance markers after halftime.
The game-winner came from Lexi Miniccuci (Westfield, Mass.) at the 28:31 mark of the first half, putting Mount Ida up 2-1 after the teams had exchanged goals within a three minute period shortly before.
Minicucci and Sarah Hemstock (Northford, Conn.) each had a goal and an assist in the contest, with Hemstock setting up Lindsey Hildreth (Westbrook, Maine) to open the scoring and Minicucci helping to finish off the contest by feeding Hemstock for her team high tenth goal of the year with just a few minutes left to play.
The Raiders (2-6, 0-3 GNAC) evened the game at a goal apiece through Linsey Roth's (Tyngsboro, Mass.) fourth goal of the season, which came on a feed from freshman Jaclyn Fraser (Wilmington, Mass.) just three minutes after Hildreth had opened the scoring.
Minicucci sent the Mustangs to the break with a 2-1 lead after finishing off a rebound in front of the net.
Freshman Taylor Lincoln (Rye, N.H.) wasted little time after the break adding to the Mount Ida advantage with her first collegiate goal in the first minute of the second half.
Mount Ida held a 21-11 edge in shots, and each team took ten penalty corners, with the Mustangs having a 7-4 advantage in the first half in that category.
Freshman Grace Ryan (Livermore Falls, Maine) improved to 5-4 on the season with two saves, while the Raiders got three saves from sophomore goalie Emily Foster (West Lebanon, N.H.) and a defensive save out of junior Emily Knoops (Tewksbury, Mass.) late in the contest.
Winners of four of their last five and six of their last eight, Mount Ida heads to New England College on Wednesday for a 3:30 non-conference affair.
Rivier leaves GNAC play for a moment as well and hosts Daniel Wesbter at 7:00 pm this Monday evening.
