Mustangs See Five Different Goal Scorers in First Win of 2016

LEICESTER, Mass. -- The Mount Ida College field hockey team collected their first win of the 2016 season on Tuesday afternoon by defeating the Hawks of Becker College by a final score of 5-1.

With the win, the Mustangs improve to 1-2 while Becker continues to search for their first win at 0-3. 

Freshman midfielder Melissa McNamara (Wilmington, Mass.) got the Mustangs on the board in the 18th minute with her first goal of the year as Mount Ida went up 1-0. The visitors would strike again in the 27th minute as sophomore forward Eleanor Garvey (Westminster, Md.) put another shot in the back of the net.

Mount Ida would head into the half in Leicester leading 2-0.

Less than five minute into the second half, Mustang sophomore midfielder Sarah Hemstock (Northford, Conn.) made it 3-0. In the 53rd minute, Hemstock assisted Garvey on another score, and junior defender Emily Salls (Springvale, Me.) had the final Mustang strike in the 65th minute.

Becker freshman midfielder Taryn Flebbe (Neptune, N.J.) scored off a corner with 36 seconds left in the game to deny Mount Ida the shutout.

Mount Ida freshman goalie Grace Ryan (Livermore Falls, Me.) had one stop in the game for the visitors. Becker sophomore goalkeeper Elysabeth Jefferies (Lisbon Falls, Me.) continued her strong play with six saves in net while the Mustangs outshot the Hawks, 14-6, on the day.

The Mustangs will be back in action on Thursday evening when they host local foe Wheelock College with game time slated for 7:30 PM. Becker will be back on the field on Thursday as well when they travel to cross-town rival Anna Maria College to take on the AMCats at 4:00 PM.
