NEWTON, Mass. – Mount Ida College closed out their 2015 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) field hockey regular season schedule on Friday night, suffering a 7-0 loss to the visiting Simmons Sharks at Alumni Field.
Sophomore Emily McConnell (Lowell, Mass.) made seven saves for the Mustangs, who drop to 4-11 on the year and 1-5 in their second season in the GNAC.
Jenna Gagnon (Waterville, Maine) and Missy Maiewski (Northampton, Mass.) each scored twice and Samantha Rondeau (Westminster, Mass.) added a goal and an assist as the Sharks improved to 11-4 (5-1 GNAC).
Two of them hooked up just over ten minutes into play when Gagnon finished a feed from Rondeau for her third goal of the year, and Simmons took a 3-0 lead into half when Julie Saltamartini (East Hampstead, N.H.) and Alexia Malone Oliver (Bristol, R.I.) each scored within 15 seconds, with Oliver's coming on a penalty stroke. For Saltamartini, the marker was her team-high 13th of the season.
Rondeau tipped home a rebound just over three minutes after halftime to extend the Sharks lead to 4-0, and Gagnon got her second goal of the game, again set up by Rondeau, in the 43rd minute.
Maiewski scored in the 48th and 64th minute to cap the scoring, with the assist on those goals coming from Analise Giarrusso (Hingham, Masss.) and Mary Neidhardt (Middlefield, Conn.), respectively.
The Mustangs managed just four shots in the game, three of them on goal, with two coming from sophomore Lexi Minicucci (Westfield, Mass.), while Simmons enjoyed a 33-4 edge in shot attempts and a 23-6 lead in penalty corners.
Junior goalie Brianna Rastello (Salem, N.H.) made three stops in 51:36 before giving way to classmate Hope McDonald (Hingham, Mass.), who was not challenged as she helped earn the combined shutout.
Mount Ida concludes their regular season next Tuesday afternoon with a 3:30 pm home game against Framingham State. The Mustangs will then turn their attention to the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) tournament, where they have earned the #6 seed and will play a quarterfinal game next Saturday.
Simmons will also prepare for the GNAC tournament with a non-conference game on Tuesday, hosting New England College at 8:00 pm.
