PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Mount Ida College field hockey team fell to the hosting Wildcats of Johnson and Wales University by a final score of 5-2 on Saturday afternoon at the Scott's Miracle Grow Athletic Complex.
With the conference setback, Mount Ida drops to 4-10 (1-4 GNAC) while the Wildcats improved to 3-11 (2-3 GNAC).
Katarina Brunette (Cohoes, N.Y.) got the scoring started early for the hosts as she gave the Wildcats the 1-0 advantage at the 7:25 mark of the first half when teammate Giavanna Ciavardoni (Latham, N.Y.) found Brunette's stick at the top of the circle off JWU's first penalty corner of the game.
Adriana Scala (Valley Cottage, N.Y.) added to the Wildcat cushion when she potted her first of two goals in the game off a rebound from a shot off the stick of Ciavardoni while giving JWU the 2-0 lead heading into the break.
The hosts padded their lead at the 38:25 mark of the game when Amanda Takach (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) increased the lead to 3-0 when teammate Madeline Larson (Catonsville, N.Y.) found Takach in front of the Mustang goal mouth.
Brunette and Ciavardoni struck again just three minutes later when Ciavardoni added to her assist total by finding Brunette's stick for the 4-0 JWU lead.
The Mustangs crept back into the thick of things when Sarah Hemstock (Northford, Conn.) cut into the Wildcat lead at 4-1 when freshman Brandy Bussiere (Colchester, Conn.) found Hemstock in front of the Wildcat goal. Less than one minute later, Lexi Minicucci (Westfield, Mass.) cut the JWU lead in half when she notched the second goal of the game for the Mustangs all while inching closer to the Wildcats, 4-2.
Scala herself as well as Larson were back at it in the 60th minute when Larson once again found the stick of Scala who put home her second tally of the contest which eventually put away the Mustangs and secured the 5-2 GNAC victory.
Scala and Brunette both tallied two goals in the contest while Ciavardoni recorded three assists along with Larson who potted two of her own; Bussiere also had an assist in the tilt.
