NEWTON, Mass. -- Mount Ida College extended their winning streak to three games with a 5-0 shutout of visiting Regis College in a non-conference field hockey tilt on Thursday afternoon at Alumni Field.
Sophomore Emily McConnell (Lowell, Mass.) made four saves to earn her second shutout of the season, and classmate Lexi Minicucci (Westfield, Mass.) scored twice in the win.
Mount Ida scored twice in the first half, with both plays being set up by junior Nikki Kinneen (Salem, N.H.), who earned a pair of assists. Kineen fed Sarah Hemstock (Northford, Conn.) in the 21st minute for the freshman's sixth goal of the year, and then set up Minicucci's first of the day just six minutes later on a similar pass across the front of the net.
Sophomore Hayley Napier (Fairhaven, Mass.) and freshman Alexa Francis (Rochester, Mass.) added to the Mount Ida lead with unassisted tallies in the second half, both of them on scrambles in front of the net, of which there were many after a combined 32 penalty corners, twenty of them for the visitors, who held a tidy 14-13 shots advantage.
Minicucci ended the scoring just 1:10 after Francis's goal with a hard shot that deflected in off of a Pride defender for her ninth marker of the year.
Regis got two saves from sophomore goalie Maresa Malcolm (Barrington, N.J.), who fell to 0-2 in her second start and third appearance of the season.
The game featured a pair of sisters playing against each other, as Mount Ida sophomore Cregan Callahn (Diamond Point, N.Y.) faced off against her sister, Regis freshman Aineen Callahan (Diamond Point, N.Y.).
Aineen Callahan had five shots in the loss for the Pride, two of them on goal, while Jenna Casello (Westborough, Mass.) managed four attempts and forced one save out of McConnell.
Mount Ida returns to conference play on Saturday morning with a 10:00 AM game at home against Lasell, the first in a triple-header at Alumni Field.
Regis also heads back into their conference schedule this weekend, heading to Elms College to play Bay Path on Saturday at 6:00 pm.
