HENNIKER, N.H.— The Mount Ida College field hockey team defeated the Pilgrims of New England College by a final score of 4-1 on Wednesday night in Henniker, New Hampshire.
With the win the Mustangs improve to 3-7 (1-2 GNAC) on the season, while the loss drops the Pilgrims to 2-9 (0-1 NAC).
The Mustangs opened the scoring just 4:35 into the opening half as Alex Giordano (Malden, Mass.) would notch her first goal of the season rebounding in a shot by teammate Sarah Hemstock (Northford, Conn.) that would be turned away by Pilgrim keeper Michaela Clark (Dorchester, Mass.). Mount Ida would make it 2-0 just over a minute later as Lexi Minicucci (Westfield, Mass.) fired in a shot from ten yards recording her team-high sixth goal of the season.
The Mustangs extended their lead to 3-0 in the 14th minute of play as Minicucci dribbled by two Pilgrim defenders along the end line, while finding the back of the net for her second goal of the night and her seventh of the season.
NEC got on the board five minutes into the second half as Cody Kent (Rye, N.H.) scored her first goal of the season one-timing a pass through the middle from Taylor Daileanes (Londonderry, N.H.). The Mustangs got a goal back with 14 minutes left to play as Hayley Napier (Fairhaven, Mass.) tapped in a feed from Minicucci giving Mount Ida the 4-1 advantage.
Picking up the win in net for Mt. Ida was Emily McConnell (Lowell, Mass.) who finished the game with two saves. In between the pipes for NEC was Clark who recorded 10 saves in the contest.
Mount Ida returns to non-conference play on Thursday, October 8th when they host Regis with game time slated for 3:30 PM. NEC hosts NAC foe Castleton Univsersity on Saturday, October 3rd at 5:00 PM.
