Defensive Struggle Ends in OT Disappointment for Field Hockey

NEWTON, Mass. – It took an extra period of play for either team to find a goal on Tuesday evening at Alumni Field, but unfortunately it was the visiting Becker Hawks who tallied in the 79th minute to secure a 1-0 overtime victory in non-conference field hockey.

Mount Ida could not capitalize on any of their 10 shots and fell to 0-3 on the year, while Becker improves to 1-3 after a game in which both sides were looking to break into the win column in 2015.

The deciding strike came from Becker freshman Nikolle Storey (Cumberland, Maine), who tipped home a slap-pass from junior Brittney Bebeau (Harrisville, R.I.) for her second goal of the year.

Mount Ida sophomore Emily McConnell (Lowell, Mass.) made five stops in the game, but could do nothing on the decisive play, as Storey found her way to the back post after inserting a penalty corner, Becker's 13th and final one of the game.

The Mustangs were outshot 17-10 and managed six penalty corner chances of their own and, despite forcing five saves out of Hawks senior keeper Gabrielle Gallo (Northport, N.Y.), were held off the scoreboard for the second time this season.

Freshman Alexa Francis (Rochester, Mass.) had a chance at the end of regulation, but her missile barely got through traffic only to be snuffed out by Gallo.

Sophomore Lexi Minicucci (Westfield, Mass.) fired five shots, while Bebeau had 11 of the visitor's 17 shots, including four of their six attempts on goal.

Mount Ida continues to look for their first win of the year when they travel to Daniel Webster on Thursday for a 4:00 pm start.

Becker returns home to host Salem State next Wednesday at 4:00 pm.
