NEWTON, Mass. – Senior goalkeeper Brenna Santos (E. Falmouth, Mass.) was recognized on Alumni Field on Saturday afternoon before the Mount Ida College field hockey played the final game of their inaugural 2014 season, a 6-2 loss to Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) foe Johnson & Wales.
Santos and the Mustangs end their first season as a varsity program with a record of 5-9 (0-6 GNAC), while the Wildcats improved to 11-6 overall (4-2 GNAC).
The senior net-minder made ten saves in the contest, and saw freshman Hayley Napier (Fairhaven, Mass.) score a pair of goals for the Mustangs, both in the second half.
Courtney McTeague (Saugus, Mass.) scored twice to lead the Wildcats, who had a 27-5 edge in shots and a 19-2 advantage in penalty corners in the game.
Both of McTeague's goals came in the second half as well, after four different scorers had given the Wildcats a 4-0 lead before the break.
Katrian Brunette (Cohoes, N.Y.) and Shaina Thompson (Delmar, Del.) each scored their seventh goals of the year in the first ten minutes, with both players finishing off rebounds to put the visitors up 2-0.
Freshman Giovanna Ciavardoni (Latham, N.Y.) also netted in the first ten minutes, picking up her team-leading 17th goal of the year with a blast from the edge of the arc.
Ali King (San Diego, Calif.) made it 4-0 at 17:51 when she knocked in a pass from Amanda Takach (Lindenhurst, N.Y.).
Napier got the Mustangs on the board in the 41st minute, getting her own rebound after a save by freshman Shannon Yoder (Boyertown, Pa.), her only stop in the game for the Wildcats.
She completed her brace on a pass from Ashley Tice (South Berwick, Maine) seven minutes later to pull the Mustangs back within a pair of goals, but McTeague scored in the 61st and 68th minute, and now has 12 goals on the season, as she helped JWU slam the door.
Santos ends her career with exactly 100 saves and three shutouts this season. She helped the Mustangs collect their first ever victory, at Daniel Webster, and a win over Wheelock in their opening game at Alumni Field.
Johnson & Wales has a final tune-up on Tuesday at Elms College in a non-conference action before they get ready for the GNAC tournament.
