Field Hockey Thwarted by Rival Lasers

NEWTON, Mass. – Two goals conceded in the last ten minutes of play, including a breakaway with twenty seconds left to seal the game, sent visiting Mount Ida College to a 4-2 defeat to cross-town rivals Lasell in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) field hockey action on Saturday afternoon.

Lexi Minicucci (Westfield, Mass.) and Lauren Kelly (Scituate, Mass.) scored for Mount Ida, who twice tied the game after falling behind by a goal.

Kelly took a pass off of a penalty corner from Molly Thompson (Canterbury, Conn.) in the 28th minute and fired passed Lasell goalie Taylor Sheehan, who made four saves in improving to 1-1 on the year.

Minicucci tied the game at two with her team-high 14th goal of the season on an unassisted tally in the 50th minute.

Nikita Soares opened and closed the scoring for the Lasers, giving the hosts the lead nine minutes in when she took a breakaway pass from Taylor Hulitzky, who had two assists in the game. Soares took a feed from Ashley Gleason to complete her brace at the end of the game as the Mustangs looked to equalize.

Gleason had netted what would be the eventual game-winner in the 61st minute, finishing an unassisted marker.

Courtney Braman helped Hulitzky earn her second assist of the day in the 44th minute, giving Lasell a 2-1 lead after the teams had gone to the break knotted at a goal apiece.

Mount Ida senior goalie Brenna Santos (East Falmouth, Mass.) made 16 saves on the day, as Lasell outshot the Mustangs 36-9 and had a 17-8 advantage in penalty corners.

Santos will be honored next Saturday afternoon when Mount Ida (5-8, 0-5 GNAC) celebrates Senior Day and hosts Johnson & Wales at noon in their final game of their inaugural season.

Lasell (5-9, 2-3 GNAC) will travel to Colby-Sawyer for a final non-conference game on Wednesday at 4:00 pm.
