Mount Ida College men’s basketball freshman forward John Fortes (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford) has been named this week’s Great Northeast Athletic Conference’s (GNAC) Rookie-of-the-Week propelling him to his first Mustang-of-the-Week honor for his career. This is the first time Fortes has been recognized in any capacity by the College or the GNAC.
Fortes led the Mustangs to a 2-1 overall week with an impressive individual offensive performance through three contests played putting his squad in a position to gain a last minute post-season play-off spot after sitting in last place for most of the year. He would average 15.0 points and 2.9 rebounds per game for the week.
His best outing came in a 69-52 GNAC victory over visiting St. Joseph’s College (ME) adding 20 points on 7-13 shooting going 3-4 from beyond the arc. In a tip-in buzzer beating win over league foe Johnson & Wales University, Fortes added a team-high 15 points and six rebounds on 7-15 shooting from the floor. In the only loss of the week falling 64-63 to Emerson College, Fortes would notch 10 points respectively.
Mount Ida hoops will travel to Northfield, Vermont Tuesday evening to take on conference member Norwich University with game time slated for 7:00 p.m.
