Mount Ida College women’s basketball freshman forward Abigail Fedigan (New Fairfield, CT/New Fairfield) has been named this week’s Mustang-of-the-Week. Along with her second Mustang-of-the-Week selection this season this week, Fedigan has also been selected as the New Women’s Basketball Association’s (NEWBA) Rookie-of-the-Week. This is the first time in the history of the women’s basketball program that any freshman has received this award.
Fedigan and the Mustangs compiled a 2-1 record last week with Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) victories over visiting Pine Manor College winning 65-51 and beating Rivier College 58-55 in a hard fought battle. Mount Ida’s lone defeat was to St. Joseph’s College (ME) losing 66-62 on Saturday in the back end of a doubleheader with the men’s team on Pink Zone day. Fedigan posted 13.3 points and 8.0 rebounds per game throughout the three contests played last week. The forward was at her best on Thursday, when she recorded her first career double-double on 17 points and 14 boards. She also added 17 points against Pine Manor College on Tuesday night in Newton, Massachusetts.
Fedigan and the Mustangs will travel to Suffolk University Tuesday, Feb 22 for the opening round of the GNAC Tourney with tip-off slated for 7:00 p.m. This is the first time since joining the GNAC four years ago that the Mustangs have qualified for a post-season berth and the first time under the direction of third year head coach Jack Casey.
