Mount Ida College football senior running back Paul Shaughnessy (Malden, MA/Northeast Metro) and sophomore linebacker Michael Brockenberry (West Haven, CT/West Haven) have been named this week’s Mustang-of-the-Week. This is the first time all season that either of these student-athlete’s have received this award.
Shaughnessy, who was also named as the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) offensive player of the week, had an impressive game rushing for a career high 261 yards on 27 carries and three touchdowns in a 25-23 Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) victory over hosting Husson University this past Saturday. He also added one catch for 13 yards that was converted for another score. Shaughnessy has filled in nicely due to a season ending ACL injury to pre-season All-American tailback Johrone Bunch. Shaughnessy has rushed for 592 total yards and five touchdowns in 2010 and is averaging 74 yards per game.
Brockenberry, who also was named to the ECFC weekly honors as the defensive player of the week, was impressive in the victory over the Eagles on the defensive side of the ball adding 7.5 total tackles, two sacks, three tackles for a loss, and an interception. Brockenberry leads the Mustangs in tackles for the season and has recorded five sacks for the season good for second on the team.
The Mustangs will host visiting ECFC member Anna Maria College this coming Saturday for their final home game of the season on senior day.
