WALTHAM, Mass. – Forward Carlos Martinez (Chelsea, Mass.) has now scored goals in the final six games in which he has represented Mount Ida College after tallying in a goal in the New England Intercollegiate Soccer League (NEISL) All-Star game played Sunday afternoon at Brandeis University.
"It was a good experience to play one more game and to be able to represent Mount Ida one last time. Out of the 46 players that got selected to play in this senior All Star game, it was amazing that they picked me out of the whole New England region," said Martinez, the reigning GNAC Offensive Player of the Year and the first Mustang to participate in this game.
Despite a 3-2 defeat for Martinez's NEISL Red Team to the NEISL Whites, in which all three White goals were scored in the final ten minutes of the second half, the afternoon was a great opportunity for Martinez to play with former opponents and club teammates.
"I played with some old friends and some old rivals so it was pretty cool to end a huge chapter of my life playing against and with some players I grew up with."
Martinez was nominated by Head Coach Joseph Campbell, while James Greenslit of Roger Williams and Stewart Flaherty of Bates served as the Head Coaches for each team in Sunday's All Star game.
Players received a Nike kit for participating in the game and there was a reception after the match for the participants and their families.
The senior striker made it an extra special occasion by scoring for his team, an appropriate end to the career of the now All-Time leader in goals and points in Mount Ida men's soccer program history.
"Scoring the goal at the game was pretty cool honestly for the fact that I got a chance to show what I can when in front of the net," said Martinez, who found great chemistry in playing with players from several different conferences across New England. "The vibe of every player was great - no one thought they were better than each other. It was more of "Hey we have one last game to play against the top players in region let's go have fun and not worry about the score."
"That's what we did and it was a great time and something I'll never forget. It was the best way to close my soccer career."
