WINTHROP, Mass. -- For the second time this season, Mount Ida College senior Carlos Martinez (Chelsea, Mass.) was named the Corvias Men's Soccer Player of the Week by the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC).
Well deserving of the honor, Martinez scored both goals in a 2-1 GNAC quarterfinal win for the Mustangs over Lasell, including the gamewinner with 2:47 left in the first overtime when he got over the top of the Lasers defense and deked the goalkeeper.
Martinez's first goal of the game came on an incredible strike from a free-kick 25 yards out and tied the game at one less than two minutes after Lasell had opened up a second-half lead.
The speedy forward now has eight goals on the year and, with the two goals on Sunday, tied the Mount Ida NCAA program record with 26 career goals.
Martinez first earned the honor on September 21st of this season when he scored twice to help Mount Ida defeat Mitchell 5-1.
He and the #2 Mustangs will host the GNAC semifinals on Wednesday at 3:30 pm, with #6 seed Albertus Magnus College coming to Alumni Field, where Mount Ida has won nine straight games.
