NEWTON, Mass. -- Sophomore forward Carlos Martinez (Chelsea, Mass.) converted a penalty kick chance into a goal in each of Mount Ida's wins this week, and for his efforts was named Great Northeast Athletic Confernece (GNAC) Player of the Week on Monday afternoon.
Martinez provided a potent offensive threat in each contest, combining for 15 shots in total, though both of his goals came from the penalty spot.
In a non-conference, double OT win over Newbury, Martinez converted the game-winner late in the second extra period of a scoreless game. In Sunday's GNAC win over Rivier, Martinez scored on another penalty kick when he was taken down on a run into the box, tying the game with just 9 minutes left in regulation.
The Mustangs would go on to win that game by a 3-2 score thanks to a game-winning goal by Michael Templeton (Charlestown, N.H.).
Martinez, the teams top scorer, has three goals on the season, one of them of the game-winning variety. He is the second Mustang to earn GNAC honors already this year, joining junior Mat Pils (Monroe, Conn.), who was named Goalkeeper of the Week in the first week of the season.
The Mustangs will be on the road for a non-conference game at Emerson on Wednesday (6:00 pm), and then will return to GNAC action Saturday with a 1:00 pm game at Anna Maria.
