NEWTON, Mass. – Mount Ida College suffered a 3-1 setback to visiting Suffolk University on Wednesday afternoon in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's volleyball match at Mount Ida College Athletic Center.
The Mustangs (10-14, 2-5 GNAC) couldn't capitalize on an opportunity to boost their conference standing as they push to make the postseason tournament, while Suffolk picks up their second conference win of the year to improve to 6-18 (2-6 GNAC), winning 25-22, 25-19, 19-25, 25-17.
The Mustangs did serve 14 aces in the four-set defeat, led by five from sophomore Mary Kate Reidy (Agawam, Mass.), who also led the team with 13 kills, while freshman Kristy Walton (Fairhaven, Mass.) turned in an 11-kill, 10-dig performance, along with three service aces.
Suffolk freshman Chidera Nwankwo (Canton, Mass.) piled up ten kills, while Jane Buckley (Plaistow, N.H.) had an errorless night, picking up nine kills and hitting .600 for the night. Heidy Barreiro (Dominican Republic) had a game-high 19 digs.
For Mount Ida, senior Kelcey Koolman (Bedford, N.H.) recorded 17 digs and also served four aces, while senior Taylor Davis (Machiasport, Maine) assisted on 28 points.
The Mustangs will return to their home court on Saturday afternoon with a GNAC tri-match that starts at 4:00 pm when Mount Ida takes on Saint Joseph's (ME), with Rivier University also coming to Mustang City.
Suffolk will host their final tri-match of the year on Saturday as well when they welcome Emmanuel and Albertus Magnus to Boston.
